PAINTING UNDER GLASS (FIXÉ SOUS VERRE) - "ALLEGORY OF THE GLORY OF ROME" - 18TH CENTURY  Translated
Description:
Rare painting under glass depicting the allegory, centered on the image of the glorification of the Roman Empire, personified by the man on horseback wearing the general's armor, located on the left side of the painting. On the right side, dancing nymphs are depicted playing music. The composition stages a multitude of figures that contribute to animating it. The work is in a good state of conservation, with a break in the lower left corner (see detail in photos). Complete with contemporary gilded frame. An item difficult to find on the antiques market because it is very fragile, and few examples have reached us. Period: Louis XVI Measurements: cm. 39 x 34 Here is some more information about the technique of painting under glass: Reverse glass painting (or painting under glass) is a difficult artistic technique that is performed directly on a sheet of glass. The glass receives the painting like a canvas. Fixed to the glass, it is through this medium that we contemplate the work. Therefore, the glass serves both as a support and as a protective varnish. This is a "cold" painting technique, so the process does not require firing. In the reverse glass technique, the technique is unique because the work is done on the back of the glass. While on a canvas we draw the composition in broad strokes and then execute the flat areas of color to gradually finish with the details, in reverse glass painting we proceed in reverse. This means that the glass painter starts with the finesse of the work to finish with the backgrounds. Therefore, down to the smallest detail, the painter must imagine the final version of the painting from the start to realize, knowing that he will also have to manage a "mirror effect" during the execution of the image since what is on the right is on the left. Varnishing on glass has the advantage of offering good protection to the paint, but requires great technical mastery because the layer painted first will be the first visible layer. The glass protects the paint and gives it its smooth and glossy appearance. Currently only one museum in France offers a permanent collection dedicated to the technique of reverse glass painting, or fixed under glass: the Revard museum, located on Mont Revard in Savoie.
