Double portrait datable between 1770/80, attributed to the painter from Varese, Giuseppe Bonino (1730-circa 1800).
The gentlewoman and the young girl are portrayed in a familiar attitude, the former sitting in a lordly manner on an armchair with a cane back, the latter embracing her mother while emerging from behind her; a curtain in the background is rendered with brushstrokes reminiscent of Antonio Magatti's style.
The reassuring gaze of the mother reflects the serenity of the relationship with her daughter, and the painter knows how to convey the intimacy and affection between the two; it is possible that it is the painter's own family.
Oil on original canvas of 72 x 57.5 cm; original frame.
