This important work is part of a pictorial cycle based on memories of previous experiences lived by the artist;
in this specific case, Canella stayed in Spain between 1820 and 1823, and noted, as he always did, impressions and annotations in his notebooks, which in some cases he translated into works.
The particularity of the work, of very high pictorial quality, is certainly represented by the subject, which refers to a very tense climate in the history of Spain, in which revolutionary reprisals and constitutional movements against King Ferdinand VII of Bourbon were suppressed also with the help of the French army.
Aranjuez is a Spanish municipality near Madrid, home to the famous Royal Palace of the same name.
