The painting in question captures the precise moment when the placid life of some farm animals is shaken by the furtive incursion of a cat. The serious threat of the feline arouses the attention of the rooster and makes the pigeons, which were resting in a wicker basket, take flight. Not all, however, are aware of the imminent danger, such as the two unsuspecting rabbits in the foreground, still intent on enjoying the herbs of the garden.
The author of this effective composition is David de Coninck, one of the painters specializing in still life subjects most appreciated in the second half of the 17th century... (See Giamblanco 2014 catalog)
